Did You Know?

According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative...

  • More than 2/3 of children reported at least 1 traumatic event by age 16.

  • The national average of child abuse and neglect victims in 2013 was 679,000 or 9.1 victims per 1000 children in the US.

  • Each year, the number of youth requiring hospital treatment for physical assaults would fill EVERY SEAT IN 9 STADIUMS.

  • 1 in 5 high school students is bullied at school and 1 in 6 experienced cyberbulling.

  • More than half of US families have been affected by some type of disaster. That is 54% of the population.

Signs and Symptoms?

Not all of the signs and symptoms of traumatic stress are visible. Parents and teachers have become trauma-sensitive to recognize them at home and school. The signs may often look like other problems in children.

Preschool children may cry or scream a lot, eat poorly or lose weight, and have nightmares. Elementary school children can become extremely anxious and fearful, have a hard time concentrating, and have difficulty getting along with their peers or complain about their sleep. Middle and high school children may be depressed, isolate from others, develop eating disorders and engage in self-harm behaviors, experiment with drugs and alcohol, and become involved in risky sexual behaviors.
